How to Print Your Own Book in Canada: From Manuscript to Mailbox

You’ve done the hard part. You’ve spent months (or years) writing your novel, memoir, or business guide. The manuscript is finished.

Now comes the question every author asks: “How do I turn this Word document into a real, physical book?”

In the past, you needed a publisher to say “yes.” Today, self-publishing gives you total control. As a Canadian author, you have some unique advantages.

At BookPrintCanada, we help hundreds of authors print their first book every year. Here is your 5-step roadmap to getting it done.

Step 1: Edit and Proofread (Don’t Skip This!)

Before you worry about ink and paper, make sure your words are polished.

  • Self-Edit: Read your book aloud. You will catch awkward sentences that your eyes might miss.
  • Get a Second Pair of Eyes: Ask a friend or hire a freelance editor. Once the book is printed, typos are permanent!

Step 2: Get Your Free Canadian ISBN

This is the best secret for Canadian authors.
While American authors have to pay for their ISBNs (International Standard Book Number), Canadian authors get them for FREE.

  • What is it? The 13-digit number on the back of the book that identifies it globally.
  • How to get it: Register for an account with Library and Archives Canada (CISS). It takes a few days, so do this early!

(Note: If you are printing a book just for family and not for sale, you don’t need an ISBN.)

Step 3: Format Your Files for Print

This is where many authors get stuck. You cannot simply print a Word doc.
You need to convert your manuscript into a Print-Ready PDF.

  • Margins: Ensure you have enough white space on the sides.
  • Bleed: If your images go to the edge of the page, you need “bleed”.
  • Cover: Your cover needs to be a separate file from your inside pages.

Step 4: Choose Your Binding Style

For self-published books, Softcover (Paperback) is the industry standard. It is cost-effective, professional, and lighter to ship.

  • Novels & Memoirs: Go with Perfect Binding. It gives you that square, printable spine that looks great on a bookshelf.
  • Workbooks & Manuals: Go with Coil Binding. It lays completely flat, making it easier to write in.

Step 5: Start Small with Digital Printing

In the old days of “Offset Printing,” you had to order 1,000 copies to get a good price. That’s a garage full of unsold books!

With Digital Printing (what we do), you don’t have to take that risk.

  • Print 25 or 50 copies first.
  • Send them to reviewers, family, or local bookstores.
  • Spot a typo? Fix it and order more later.

There is no minimum order required to get professional quality.
