How Many Pages Does a Book Need? (Minimums & Maximums for Printing)

We love seeing the variety of projects that come through our digital presses. Some days we print thick 500-page fantasy novels, and other days we print short 15-page children’s stories.

But sometimes, a client will ask for a binding style that is physically impossible for their page count.

At [Book printing Canada], we use physics, not magic. Different binding styles require specific thicknesses to hold the paper together. If you are formatting your manuscript and wondering, “How many pages does my book need to be?” here is our strict manufacturing guide.

1. Perfect Binding (The Standard Paperback)

[Perfect Binding] requires glue. To apply the strong PUR glue, the book needs a wide enough “spine” for the glue to adhere to the pages and the cover.

• The Minimum: Your book must be at least 30 to 40 pages (depending on the [Paper Weight]). If you try to perfect-bind a 15-page book, there is no spine. It is too thin; the glue will fail, and the pages will fall out.
• The Maximum: Our commercial digital presses can comfortably bind books up to 600-800 pages (about 2 to 2.5 inches thick). Anything thicker than that becomes extremely difficult to read and risks the spine cracking under its own weight.

2. Coil Binding (The Lay-Flat Manual)

[Coil Binding] is incredibly forgiving, making it the top choice for training manuals and cookbooks.

• The Minimum: Technically, you can coil bind as few as 4 to 8 pages. As long as we can punch holes in it, we can bind it.
• The Maximum: We stock various coil sizes. We can comfortably bind thick workbooks up to 400-500 pages. However, keep in mind that a massively thick coil-bound book becomes heavy and slightly harder to turn the pages smoothly.

What If My Book Is Too Thin?

If you are printing a short 12-page or 24-page catalog or zine, and it is too thin for Perfect Binding, you need Saddle Stitching (staples folded in half).
Important Rule: For saddle stitching, your total page count must be a multiple of 4 (e.g., 8, 12, 16, 20 pages).
