If you are a Canadian author planning to self-publish your book, you have a massive advantage over authors in the US: Your ISBNs are completely FREE.
An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is the 13-digit number and barcode on the back of your book. It is essential if you want to sell your book in bookstores, libraries, or online.
However, getting one means navigating the Library and Archives Canada (LAC) website, which can be very confusing.
At BookPrintCanada, we want your publishing journey to be as smooth as our printing process. So, we have created this simple, text-based walkthrough to help you get your free Canadian ISBN without the headache.
Part 1: Register for Your Publisher Account
Even if you are self-publishing a single book, the government considers you a “Publisher.” You must first apply for an account.
Step 1: Go to the official government registration page by clicking here: Create an ISBN Canada Account
Step 2: You will see a long wall of text (the Statement of Use). Scroll all the way to the very bottom of the page and click the button that says “YES — I accept”.
Step 3: Fill out the Publisher Profile form.
- Tip: If you don’t have a registered business name, simply use your full legal name as the Publisher Name.
- You must use a valid Canadian mailing address.
- Click Submit when finished.
Step 4: Wait. The system is not instant. It usually takes between 3 to 10 business days for a human to review your application. Once approved, you will receive an email containing your Username and Password.
Part 2: Assign an ISBN to Your Book
Congratulations! You are officially an approved Canadian publisher. Now it’s time to generate the 13-digit number for your new book.
Step 5: Use the username and password from your email to log in to the Canadian ISBN Service System (CISS) here: Login to CISS
Step 6: Once logged in, look at the navigation menu on the left side of your screen. Click the link that says “Manage Logbook”.
Step 7: Inside your logbook, look near the top of the page for a button labeled “Assign New ISBN”. Click it.
Step 8: Fill out the details for your specific book:
- Title: Enter the exact title of your book.
- Format: This is crucial! Select “Paperback / Softcover” if you are printing a physical book with us. (Note: You need to assign a separate, different ISBN if you also plan to release an eBook).
- Publication Date: Enter an estimated date of when the book will be ready.
- Click Save.
Step 9: The screen will refresh, and you will see your brand new 13-digit ISBN (starting with 978) displayed on the screen. You can now use this number to generate a barcode graphic for the back cover of your book design.
Important Final Step: The “Legal Deposit”
Because the Canadian government gave you this ISBN for free, you are legally required to send a copy of your printed book to the national library for their archives.
Once your book is printed, you must mail two copies (if your print run is over 100 copies) or one copy (if you print under 100 copies) to Library and Archives Canada in Ottawa.
